A love story carved in stone,
Sweetheart Abbey was founded
by Lady Dervorgilla in 1273 as a lasting memorial to her true
love.
Devoted to one another in life, Lady Dervorgilla was devastated
upon her husband's death in 1269. She had his heart embalmed
and placed in a silver and ivory casket which she held close
to her own heart
for twenty years - 'her sweet silent companion'.
Upon her own death, she was laid to rest in its sanctuary
clasping the heart of her beloved to her bosom.
Here she lies to this day, her time-worn effigy depicting
the faithful widow embracing her husband's heart for all eternity.
