John Balliol and the Kings
of Scotland:
John de Balliol of Barnard Castle and founder of Balliol College,
Oxford, wed his one and only true love, Lady Dervorgilla, in
1233. Daughter of Alan, the last Lord of Galloway, and great
niece to King William the Lion of Scotland, Lady Dervorgilla’s
veins ran rich with Royal Scottish blood. With extensive lands
in Scotland, England and France, the esteemed couple were regarded
amongst the most opulent landowners in Europe.
Their son, John and grandson,
Edward, went on to become great Scottish Kings through difficult
and turbulent times, here portrayed in this magnificent processional
frieze of famous Scots throughout history by William Hole on
display in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh.
